Gregg Hanson was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1951. After his father was killed in a tragic car/train collision in 1952, Gregg's mother, Bernadette, met the challenge of raising Gregg and his sister, Heather, as a single parent.
They moved to Winnipeg in 1958 and resided first in East Kildonan and then in Fort Rouge. His mother worked for Investors Group until the time of her retirement in 1982. She passed away in 1985.
From 1965 to 1969, by working evenings, weekends and summer holidays at various jobs, Gregg was privileged and proud to attend St Paul's High School.
After St Paul's, Gregg went on to the University of Manitoba where he obtained his Bachelor of Commerce Degree (Honours), working summers at the Royal Bank. He joined the firm of Touche Ross (now Deloitte & Touche), earning his Chartered Accountant's designation in 1979. Gregg became interested in the insurance industry after being a part owner of a Winnipeg general insurance agency, and joined The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company in 1979. He worked himself up through the ranks, becoming President and Chief Executive Officer in 1992.
While attending university, Gregg met his best friend Mary (nee Wiswell), who he married in 1977. They reside in Charleswood and have two children, Adam who is 17 and Janine who is 15. Adam is attending Grade 12 at his Dad's old "Alma Mater" - St Paul's, while Janine attends St Mary's Academy in Grade 10. Adam loves to play golf, badminton and the guitar (not necessarily in that order) while Janine spends most of her free time on the basketball court. Gregg, Mary and the children love to navel together, having been to such places as England, France, the Caribbean as well as parts of Canada and the United States. The family also enjoys a good part of the summer at Victoria Beach. Another favourite place of Gregg and Mary is San Diego, California where they were transferred with Wawanesa and lived from 1982 to 1985.
Gregg Hanson's three true loves are his family and friends, his job at Wawanesa and his community, and he would do almost anything for any of them. In addition to his responsibilities at Wawanesa Mutual, Gregg has volunteered with the Canadian Mental Health Association, Foundations for Health, Rossbrook House, St Ignatius Church and the United Way, as well as serving on the Boards of Big Brothers, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Arthritis Society. He is the Past Chairman of the Insurance Institute of Canada, Chairman of the Property & Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation (PA4CICC), and Board Member of the Centre for Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO) and the Association of Canadian Insurers.
His most pressing volunteer challenge began in 1994 when be accepted the Chair of Finance position for the Pan American Games to be held in Winnipeg. There is no doubt that Gregg will give his all to make these Games the best that they can be.
