May 25, Communication to Graduating Class:

Peace of Christ!

I hope this email finds all of you well, safe and hopefully enjoying the outdoors a bit more in sunny Manitoba. I have some information that I would like to share with you, some of it new and some of it previously communicated.

I can only imagine what each of you may be going through.  Your senior year has been altered.  Unlike any other grad class in the history of the school, you’ve lost the opportunity to play your last game, perform on the stage, engage with your teachers and peers, and most importantly, be recognized for your many achievements in the traditional sense  - all important milestones as you progress to the next stage in your journey. As the COVID-19 pandemic becomes part of our history, it too will serve as an example of your spirit, perseverance, courage and how you are able to flourish against all odds through these defining events. This is magis.

You may recall the communication that went out on Friday, May 15, wherein we stated that it is unlikely that large gatherings will be permitted in the upcoming months and thus, it is highly unlikely that our students will be back in school before the end of June.  The recent implementation of Restoring Safe Services: Draft Plan for Phase Two earlier than expected is allowing us to look at alternate ways to acknowledge and celebrate the Class of 2020 within the parameters of the new guidelines.

In preparation for this new way of proceeding, a Grad Events Student Advisory Committee (GESAC2020) comprised of Mr. Lewin (Principal), Mrs. Langdon (Grad Committee Chair), Nicholas Brzak ’20, Adam Christie-Stewart ’20, Chris George’20, Mitchell Langdon ’20 Ian Macdonell ’20 and myself have been formed. This committee met to discuss plans for the Class of 2020.

The present plan is as follows:

Grad Dates

  • Father-Son Golf Tournament – we are looking into the possibility of having this event in June now, but it will have to be modified to occur without the sit-down dinner that normally follows.  More details to come.
  • Grad Mass- Sunday, August 30 @ 10:00 am, we are presently looking at some options that would permit us to celebrate this mass as scheduled at 10:00 am on June 14. We will be consulting with the graduands on Thursday.
  • Mother-Son Mass and Luncheon- Monday, August 31, time TBA
  • Convocation- The members of GESAC 2020 expressed a strong preference for having a convocation ceremony at St. Paul’s on Tuesday, June 23. We are looking to offer some form of in-person ceremony in smaller groups as per the guidelines established through the Restoring Safe Services: Draft Plan for Phase Two.  Failing this, there is a backup date for Convocation on Tuesday, September 1.
  • Dinner, Dance & Safe Grad - Wednesday, September 2, at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. We are also considering Sunday, October 11, 2020, as a backup date for this event.

The Grad Package will be going out on June 1. Please respond to the deadline by June 15.

Graduand photos are scheduled for June 9 and 10 here at the school. Soon, Mr. Sterner will provide more information on this process, along with the schedule. Please ensure that you are here as scheduled. Retakes will not be available. Don’t forget to book your haircut before then! We’ll also have a little souvenir for you to commemorate this day.

I look forward to providing graduands with more information at the Webex Class of 2020 meeting on May 28 at 8:30 am https://stpauls.webex.com/meet/tlagasse.

I want to thank all those graduands who responded to the call for nominations for the various speaking roles for Grad Events. The ballots will be coming out shortly for the selection of these speakers.

I would like to thank Mrs. Langdon and the Grad Committee, Mrs. Lagasse and the members of GESAC2020 for their hard work and patience in these challenging times.

God bless and stay well.

 Mr. Kevin Booth ‘78
