Nov 3 2010 – Last night, at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, the St Paul’s High School community honoured Dr Peter B MacDonald ’76 with the Ignatian Challenge Award at the 17th Annual Tribute Dinner.
Dr MacDonald, a world renowned orthopedic surgeon, humbly accepted the award during which he thanked the many people who provided inspiration and balance in his life - his wife, Sherry, and their children family, friends and colleagues. Dr MacDonald thanked his mentors during his time at St Paul’s namely: Mr George Dawson ’61, Mr Len Sitter ’61, Mr Larry Franz, Mr Richard Grover, Mr Ernie Ostermann ’57, Fr Emit McKenna, SJ, Fr Barry Connolly, SJ, Fr Luke Grimes, SJ, Fr John J Murray, SJ, Fr John Pungente, SJ, and the late Mr Nick Laping ’61 – all of whom helped develop Dr MacDonald to his full potential.
Dr MacDonald also referenced previous Ignatian Challenge Award winner, Robert M Chipman ’44, and expanded on his first of “Twelve Precepts for Life” which states that “the winners in this world are those that give.” Dr MacDonald interprets “giving” as giving time and experience to our youth which in turn will help them become engaged and travel down the right path. As a father of three, Dr MacDonald urged people to mentor our youth – provide them with examples of excellence, critical thinking and discipline – key aspects in the formation of students at St Paul’s High School.
Dr MacDonald currently practices medicine in the role of Medical Director, Department of Surgery, at the Pan Am Clinic. In addition, he is Head, Section of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Manitoba; Gibson Chair of Orthopedic Surgery and Research; Regional Leader, Section of Orthopedic Surgery for the WRHA Surgery Program; Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation Studies at the Health, Leisure and Human Performance Research Institute; and is the Head Team Physician and Head Orthopedic Surgeon for the Manitoba Moose and Winnipeg Blue Bombers respectively.
Dr MacDonald is a member of many local and international associations and committees and has served on numerous Boards of Directors. He is sought after globally for his expertise and excellence in his field. He has given over 240 presentations worldwide, contributed to over 50 written publications and to date, has been the recipient of 48 research grants.
Most notably, however, is Dr Peter MacDonald’s role in the development of the Pan Am Clinic. Today’s Pan Am Clinic is a world class facility with a multidisciplinary and community-based model for healthcare. It is certainly ahead of the curve thanks in large part to the leadership and vision of Dr MacDonald.
Dr MacDonald attributes much of his success to his time at St Paul’s saying he “arrived as a boy and left as a man.” His St. Paul’s experience was very important as it shaped his frame of mind during those critical years, allowing him to develop values and beliefs that he retains to this day. Today, as an alumnus, Dr MacDonald is very proud of his high school experience at what he calls “the best school in Manitoba” and Winnipeg’s “jewel.” His burning desire to help support its legacy is evident in his continued benevolence to the school and its mission.
The evening is an annual fundraising event in support of the St Paul’s High School Bursary Fund, an essential aspect of a Jesuit education at St Paul’s High School. The D.I. & Peggy MacDonald Bursary (in honour of Dr MacDonald’s parents) was established as the primary beneficiary of the evening’s proceeds.
