On the windy and rain swept pitches of Maple Grove Rugby Park two Crusader teams put out solid efforts as they battled their opponents and the weather conditions. Coach Jarrod Stadnyk's JV squad came from behind in the second half with tough running and solid ball movement to defeat the JV Kelvin Clippers to win the JV City Championship in an exciting match.
The First XV Varsity squad once again met their rival, the SJR Eagles. Despite having numerous opportunities with the wind in the first half were unable to cross the Eagle's try line for a score. The Eagles used one close penalty kick with the wind in the second half to score the only points of the game, giving them a 3-0 victory and the championship for the second year in a row.
The Crusaders played inspired defense and offense but penalties and mishandled balls plagued the Cru at key moments.
The Crusaders will possibly see the Eagles again as Provincial playoffs occur Friday June 3rd and 4th at Maple Grove. Westman will be represented by Minnedosa and Souris, while Winnipeg will see SJR and St. Paul's participating.
A special thanks to all the brave fans that supported the Crusaders today.
