ROLE PROFILE/JOB DESCRIPTION PRINCIPAL

St Paul’s High School, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba was founded in 1926 by the Society of Jesus and is an independent Jesuit school for young men in Grades 9-12, serving 595 young men from diverse economic, ethnic and religious backgrounds.

 

MISSION

A St Paul's education is based upon Ignatian pedagogy derived from the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius. Through the commitment and efforts of all members of the learning community – students, parents, staff, alumni, friends and board members – our students develop into competent, conscientious and compassionate men for others who dedicate their lives to leadership through service and cooperation with others in order to praise, reverence, and serve God. Our education forms graduates to become lifelong learners who are open to growth, intellectually competent, loving, religious, and committed to doing justice.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Principal is responsible for the administration of the school, including policies, regulations and procedures to ensure that all students are supervised and educated in a safe, traditional Catholic and university preparatory environment that meets the approved curriculum and mission of the school. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for scheduling, curriculum development, spiritual and extra-curricular activities, management and coordination of academic personnel, staff development, emergency and safety procedures, and communication with the Jesuit High School community.

The Principal reports directly to the President. The following positions report directly to the Principal: all Vice-Principals, faculty and the Principal’s assistant. 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Policy

  • Interprets and implements Ignatian Pedagogy and the spiritual direction of the school in a manner consistent with a Roman Catholic and Jesuit education
  • Is responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures in connection with all facets of the school program
  • Is responsible for the development and implementation of curriculum, school programs, school policy, advisory committees, staff meetings, and conferences
  • Implements the provisions of personnel contracts in the school.

 

Staff

  • Appoints and evaluates the Vice-Principals with the approval of the President
  • Coordinates interviewing prospective employees and makes appropriate recommendations to the President
  • Oversees the instructional supervision and/or evaluation of teachers
  • Works with the Vice Principal, Academics in assigning class loads and extra-curricular activities
  • Provides appropriate professional development programs, identifies staff training needs, and recommends programs and activities
  • Is responsible for regular faculty meetings
  • Works with the individual departments on their needs, evaluations of personnel, and recommendations for hiring and dismissal.

 

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Assumes overall responsibility and accountability for instructional programs
  • Directs the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum with the assistance of the Vice Principal, Academics.

 

Students

  • Is available for consultation with parents with regard to their son(s) progress
  • Oversees student behavioral and academic disciplinary procedures in consultation with the Vice Principal, Students. 

 

Community

  • Coordinates, with the President’s Office, procedures to inform parents about school programs
  • Establishes newsletters, handbooks, and brochures to inform parents and other interested parties about school programs and students’ progress (parents’ night, parent conferences with teachers, newsletters, etc.).

 

School Budget

  • Consults with Department and Program Chairs for departmental and program budget
  • Reviews budgetary requests and establishes priorities in program needs
  • Submits the instructional school budget to the President
  • Works with the President and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors to develop the school budget.

 

EVALUATION

The President will evaluate the Principal each year. The evaluation will be based on the responsibilities listed above. Information for the evaluation will be gathered from the administration, faculty, and staff of St Paul’s.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The Principal will be a dynamic, energetic leader who facilitates learning, growth, and collaboration both inside and outside the classroom. The Principal is a Catholic who should have a genuine commitment to Jesuit education and the ability and willingness to relate well to students and members of the school community and to interact with them regularly.

 

The Principal must have or be working towards a Master’s Degree in Education and have a proven track record in teaching and/or leadership experience in a Catholic school setting. In addition, the Principal must hold or be eligible to qualify for a Manitoba Teaching Certificate.  Manitoba Education Level 1 and 2 Administration Certification would be an asset. The Principal must understand, embrace, and be able to articulate the Jesuit mission and vision. It is important that the Principal create a collaborative, positive, and inclusive environment conducive to open communication. The Principal must be open to new ideas and able to effectively implement policies and programs that further the school’s mission.
