They came from all corners of the province. North, East, South and West to gather in the ONE historic place that would decide this years top cross country runners and teams.
Kilcona park, long known for the many great battles between the Kildonan and Transcona clans, who fought for the control of this ancient landfill treasure. This was once again the scene of a great battle. This battle was not just against rival tribes and clans, but one against the terrain and elements. This venue had it all: snow, rain, sleet, wind, hills, hay bales, long grass, and collapsing bodies.
The Junior Varsity team (top 7 runners) for the first time in school history was made up entirely of grade 9's. They competed like 'warrior poets' and managed to finish an impressive 4th place despite missing their top runner due to injury.
Paulo Cornejo was the top counter for the Cru placing 15th overall. Rounding out the top 5 places were Cam MacDonald (22nd), Ian MacDonnell (26th), Jack Healy (30th) and Jordan Guberman (42nd). Congrats to the rest of the JV runners who ran their hearts out yesterday: Sean Coughlin, Noah vander Berg, Andrew Kaul, John Moncrieff, Chance Sabados, Bennett Lewin, Drew Demarin, and Ethan Grant.
The Varsity Cru were led by grade 11 speedster Jack Taylor who finished behind 4 grade 12 runners to finish 5th overall. Seniors Max Piche (35th), Ben Penner (42nd), Mackenzie Borys (64th), and Antonio Guerra (88th) all ran their last high school race with heart and pride. Bryce Marino (83rd) was the other member who ran a great race.
The Varsity Cru finished in 4th place only "13" points away from first.
Thanks to all the runners who made this an extremely enjoyable year for Coach McMillan and Coach Kuzenko.
