NewsJSerra Catholic High School Invitational Hockey Tournament Elite Varsity Champs!

The Crusader Hockey team #1 traveled down to Anaheim, CA to participate in the JSerra Catholic High School Invitational Tournament from Nov. 22-27, 2016. The boys got to spend some time enjoying the Ducks vs. NYI game with a visit to the Ducks dressing room and training facilities afterwards courtesy of Ducks forward Ryan Garbutt, see the sights of LA, Hollywood and Beverly Hills and spent a day in Disneyland. Enjoying all these extracurrcualr activities did not distract the boys from getting down to business on the ice when they needed to. Going 3-1 in the round robin, the Crusaders were matched against a very strong Santa Margarita team ( Teemu Selanne was there to watch his son, who plays on the team!). The Cru came out on top with a shutout for Eric Samyn who played phenomenally, making key saves to give the Cru every chance to win. In the final, the Cru got a chance to revenge their loss against a tough Orange Lutheran team who they lost to in dramtic fashion in round robin play after leading 3-1 going into the third period of that game. Even though guys were tired after playing 5 games in 4 days, and some sick with the flu (Ironman Michael Lee who found the will to still play) the guys came out fired up for this last game. The Cru were not about to repeat the round robin loss to Orange, and, even though they were down 2-0 after the first period, stormed back for a 6-3 victory to win the JSerra Varsity Elite division of the tournmament! Kyler Van de Mosselaer was in net for the win, making a lot of big saves to hold the Orange Lutheran team from going up 3-0 before the Cru found their stride and buried this game. Matt Sachvie was named game MVP. Congratulations to all the boys on a job well done!
