The St. Paul's High School Alumni Association is pleased to welcome Dr. Peter MacDonald '76 for the next installment of the Alumni Speaker Series presented by Coughlin Insurance.

 

Dr. Peter MacDonald is the Medical Director, Department of Surgery at the Pan Am Clinic in Winnipeg. He is also the Head, Section of Orthopaedic Surgery for the University of Manitoba and the Regional Leader, Section of Orthopaedic Surgery for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. In addition, Dr. MacDonald is the Gibson Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief Research and Innovation Officer of the Pan Am Clinic. He is the Fellowship Director for the University of Manitoba Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Upper Extremity Reconstruction Fellowship which has trained over 50 fellows.

 

Dr. MacDonald also serves as Medical Director Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club and Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and is on the Editorial Board for the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine and is the current President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association. He was also Program Co-Chair for the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons 2016 Open Meeting. He was the 2010 Ignatian Challenge Honoree of his Alma mater St Paul’s High School.

 

Dr. MacDonald completed his undergraduate degrees in Science and Medicine and his Orthopaedic Residency at the University of Manitoba. He then went on to complete his Sports Orthopaedic Fellowship under the guidance of Drs. Richard Hawkins, Peter Fowler and Anthony Miniaci at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. MacDonald has established himself as a prominent researcher in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and in his career he has been awarded 71 research grants, published 130 articles in peer reviewed journals, completed 97 research abstracts and has given 375 presentations at national and international meetings and symposia. He has also completed 15 chapters, 4 educational videos and 5 review articles. He is a full professor at the University of Manitoba and is a member of many orthopaedic and sports medicine associations. Dr. MacDonald has a role of mentorship in surgical training and has provided innumerable opportunities for the development of residents and international fellows in their surgical skills and their research interests. In 2016 the online publication “Orthopedics Today” named Dr MacDonald one of the top 16 sports knee surgeons in North America.

 

Dr MacDonald is married to his wife of 32 years, Sherry, and has three children: Dr Lindsey MacDonald, Dr Carling MacDonald and Duncan MacDonald (St Paul’s class of 2010).
